Attention: Labour Inspection
by Andrea Lechtape
As the Labour Inspection Office has informed us, a monitoring campaign of a very special kind will soon be underway on the Canary Islands. The target will be companies employing people on a part-time basis.
Often the number of working hours specified in the employment contract does not coincide with the hours actually worked. In plain language, this means that some of the wages are paid illegally, thus cheating the social insurance system out of contributions.
The new legislation now demands that both employers and employees must keep a record of all working hours. This record must show which employees are doing the work, on what days and during what hours they are working.
This record must be kept on a daily basis and must be signed or initialled by the employer. Upon request, it must be made available for presentation at the CENTRO DE TRABAJO, i.e. at the work place. If that requirement is not met, severe penalties can be expected.
